Putin Considering Visit to Pyongyang as Russia-North Korea Relations Strengthen

In a significant turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown interest in visiting Pyongyang, a decision prompted by an invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This invitation was confirmed by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) after Putin's meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Russia. If it materializes, this visit would mark Putin's first trip to North Korea in more than two decades.

Building Stronger Bonds Amid Global Turmoil

The timing of Putin's potential visit is noteworthy, occurring amidst heightened global tensions surrounding Russia's military actions in Ukraine. North Korea has openly supported Russia's endeavors, highlighting a significant alignment between the two nations. This shared stance appears to be a response to what both countries perceive as provocative actions by the United States and its allies against North Korea.

Additionally, Russia and North Korea are looking to collaborate on addressing regional issues, guided by the principles of the U.N. Charter and international laws. This deepening cooperation has sparked concerns among the United States and its allies.

A Long-Awaited Return

Should the visit materialize, it would be Putin's first trip to North Korea since July 2000. Although the exact date remains unconfirmed, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has suggested that the visit is expected to take place 'in the foreseeable future.' Putin's only other visit to Pyongyang occurred over two decades ago when he met with Kim Jong Il, the father of the current North Korean leader.

During Foreign Minister Choe's visit to Russia, discussions also revolved around the potential enhancement of military cooperation between the two nations. Both sides found common ground on regional and international issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. Russia expressed appreciation to North Korea for its support in the military operation in Ukraine.
